In this picture I'm sending my GSSL a 500hz tone.

I have the threshold control all the way to the Left. Meaning I'm compressing as much as possible.
The ratio is 10:1
Fastest attack and release times.

Is it normal to have that much Harmonic distortion... it doesn't sound good... it's not usable... Ideas if not normal?

..you don't want short attack and release times while compressing heavily..

I sure don't... but is that because that amount of distortion is normal for this compressor or is there a defect in my GSSL?

you'll want to use the SLOWEST attack/release and a relatively high test frequency when evaluating compressor distortion

This shows the circuit at-best - added distortion when getting faster is a result of timing, and is present in any type of dynamics
