ok back to the original question - I also see 3-colors as "too much"
waay back I had a gate designed to be a one-knob thing (sensitivity, everything else optimized for instrument recording) and had a 2-color, green-red visual fb
but hey I cheated and used a 555 monostab so that those damn leds didn't trip too much and were actually neat to look at, not some nervous flickering bs..
but yeah I remember I had to be uber smart with psu rail decoupling
