Here a small image about some violin radiations:

I couldn't see those images, but a read very old book years ago that described the radiation patterns from different acoustic musical instruments.

Perhaps listen with you headphones while moving the mic around to get the particular sound you want.

Just to throw in, that if you are on London and want to hire Richmond Film Services are great and outrageously cheap.

I'd pick up a KM84 if you want a bit of enhancement, Scheops if you want the truth. The recommendations for a decent dynamic are good if the room is rough or you want a more controlled sound to fit in a mix.

I like Ribbons on violin, my new favourite beeing the Samar Audio VL37  !
I used an AEA R44c , but it's a pain to position this monster.

[rant] It looks like this thread is turning into the usual endless list of choices resulting from personal experiences, resources and opportunities. It is useful, up to a point; in the end, when we've actually listed all the mics in existence, what will we have achieved? I'm guilty of this too.  :-[
So far, the best recommendations have been Rocinante's and JR's. IMO.
Give a man a fish, teach a man to fish, blaaah... [/rant]
