does the hamtone sound like the 2108 ? I am looking for amic pre that will place a snare in a mix without eq. I want to try a kit and learn why these parts affect the mix. Eventualy Ihope to have lots of choices but for now I have a m610, 1604 crapie, We start retracking in several weeks thanks.

if you want a 2108 go buy one. the hamptone is an entirely different beast. It sounds great, but if you know the sound of 1108's you are not going to get anything like that out of the hamptone pre which isnt squishy like that at all. The hamptone is a great sounding circuit which you may very well love to death after you build it, it just makes a different sound than the amplifier you cited. Modding that circuit to sound like a 2108 is completely missing the point.

I think you may be barking up the wrong tree here. I bought and built a hamptone HJFP from kit and it is truly a quality piece. I see it as neutral enough to be a "go to" - it is my best pre and a great value IMHO

Look for what folks say about it online and you'll see good reviews like mine.

Just build the Hamptone and be done with it.
It is very good sounding.
Later build something that sounds better to you.

You are getting hung up over flavors of ice cream
It is all good. You need to build it and learn.

You are getting hung up on the details rather than recording music.

You are never going to find one solution too your problems.

Build it!

toilet, try not to think of it as EQ, every amplifier is going to put something somewhere in your mix, every transformer type you hook that amplifier up to is going to effect the space where its output sits in your mix. You can mix and match all kinds of things to get the desired effect, this is the main benefit of building your own gear, but you really need to experiment endlessly to get a good handle on it. Building the hamptone jfet pre may be a perfect place to start as its easy to build, affordable and there is tons of support all over the place from people who have built it. It also sounds very good, you'll find SOMETHING it sounds good on.

yeah it sure will sound better than i have with the mackie. I know that the internet is for porn but i refuse to make another record with drum sounds like this any more! If this road is the first step to get there(hamptone) Im taking it. thank u guys

I love the sound of the 2108. My desert island pre.

Popped the top off of one recently and damn did our buddy Winston do an incredible job. Very elegant layout. Huge input and output transformers.

I tend towards the simpler designs but only because of my limitations. Folks like Winston and Dan Kennedy cross the line into complex designs packing a full clip and really come out on top.

see some of what you said those names (the designers)is stuff i dont know about. The only reason that Iam starting with the hamptone is to start learning why (amps) will place sounds in different places in the mix. there is also whats been said about jfet distortion. I try a sans amp bass driver on the snare the other day.... very cool distortion . The plus side is if this does not work on the snare for me like im looking for it will on something. thanks again.
