Inductance to digital...

Just saw TI has a new breed of inductance to digital converters...and I just wondered what in the heck would this be used for?
Since the development of the internet millions of people have died, the two may or may not be related.

Yeah went back and read the feature list and I guess it's mostly for keypads and "inductive sensing" products, says it has use in audio device dials...places where you want precise dials and don't want magnetic or mechanical sensing...it just seems like a lot of work for a dial...
