I'm trying to figure out what kind of screw  is used  in the Neumann VG66  modules. The screws hold the  cover on and thred into stand offs.

M 2.5 are too small.  M3  are too big. When I measure an  M2.5 with my caliper I measure 2.4mm.  When I measure the M3 I get  2.81mm.  The screw I want measures  2.55mm.

I saw  an M 2.6 looking around online although  I've never heard of that size before. Is that most likely what I have?

I guess is not imperial because would be a really odd one, 3/32 is about 2.4mm, 1/8 is about 3.2mm. So you'll be talking something like 7/64 or about 2.8mm which I don't think it comes standard...

Following your measurements you get .1 to .2 mm under the screw size, I guess for the 2.55mm should be M2.7 but again, looks really strange to me. You could definitely try with those M2.6 if you could get them without much trouble I guess.

Do you know those are M screws? British Association screw threads have two possible sizes, with 2.5 and 2.8 mm outer diameter. UNC, UNF and UNEF also has similar sizes with #3 and #4. And that's what I found in other standard than M in wiki...

Good luck finding those small screws, if you are really screwed  ;D couldn't you jump to an easier to find, bigger size and make it fit?

It is German  equipment from the 1960's.  I suppose it could be a DIN standard that  I've never seen.

You're right, for sure not a BA, it could be UN but I don't think so... Should be DIN but I don't know any between 2.3 and 3mm, if you say there is a M2.6 but sounds at least strange. I don't know what other standard by DIN other than M which could have something there...

Here's a nice website (in german language), that I use for reference:
http://www.gewinde-normen.de/
...theres no M2.6 listed.

here's another site (pdf in german and english):
http://www.hahnreiter.de/docs/seite_1-6.pdf
....here is a M2.6 on the list

...markus :)

Thanks for the links. I'm pretty sure the mystery screw is 0.45mm pitch like an M2.5 or M3. I looked at all three together under magnification and the threads lined up on all three screws. Only the overall diameter is different. I have a bunch of different screw checkers and I also have pitch gauges. I'm stumped so far.

M2.6 seems to be available in 0.45mm pitch too.  looks like this was a DIN standard (DIN13) and has widely been raplaced with M2.5, part of ISO.....

Success! I was going to take a photo until I realized that screw porn may not be tolerated:)
