i understand the concept of the star grounding technique, but i'm curious to know what is overkill and what might make it better.

If I run a seperate ground wires from each grounding point to the star ground point will this defeat the purose? I'm working with a two channel tube preamp that would probably have about 50 ground wires if i did it this way instead of using one ground wire per circuit board.

know what i mean?

Star ground is to keep a stable reference in cases where current is drawn - thus generating potential differences because of the (low) resistance in ground paths.

Star ground anything that draws decent amounts of currents, e.g. tube cathodes etc.

Use a common ground for signal grounds and other stuff that don't draw supply current..
