Hi techies,

and Dave M. in particular,

Here is a bit more information I found when looking through my VCA papers (for something else)

1 - a datasheet for a (discrete?) Aphex VCA called "505":

It looks very interesting, sadly this is all I have on it..

2 - A great theoretical article by Ben Duncan, Studio Sound 1989, about the ins and outs of VCA's - DBX, Valley, and SSM:
Jeez, remember when audio magazines used to publish articles like that?
Yup... magazines today are nothing more than just extensions of the marketing department. Regurgitation machines. I mean come on... have you ever read a BAD review in a magazine? Nope... they're not stupid. They're not going to bite the hand that allows them to have a paycheck.

US magazines are the worst kind. EVERY PAGE has a stupid ad, taking up 1/3 at least and up to 2/3 of the page, nothing but ads. Nothing interesting to read anymore... and they're wondering why circulation is down?

I now read mostly UK magazines. The paper quality is better, the articles refreshing, and you're not inundated with ads on every page. Yeah, I pay $10-$14 more for a UK magazine, rather than $4.95 for a US magazine. It's worth it.

Just got back from a very warm and sunny South Devon in the west of England - now, Ben Duncan occasionally wrote articles for Home & Studio Recording back in the 80s, including a design for a compressor using the NE572. Are you aware of this?
