Is this really a new type of mic design? Have to try one out when they're available.

The idea of planar transducers is very old. The pros and cons are known.
The fact that the driving force is spread over the whole surface is presented as an advantage, by giving "speed".
The "speed" argument is a fallacious one; the planar nature of the voice-coil makes it essentially a one-turn voice-coil. As a result, the overall force is not significantly different than that of a multi-turn coil.
There is an argument for the inherently isophase drive, though, which makes the transducer almost immune to break-up effects.
Designers of conventional dynamic transducers go to great lengths about controlling diaphragm break-up; planar drive allows the use of quite floppy material without any specific caution.
A planar transducer is by nature bi-directional; this has been tauted as an advantage by its supporters, but in the case of microphones, not everybody wants figure-8 mics. Audeze may have applied some clever acoustic trickery to make their mics uni-directional (cardioid), as Shure and RCA did with some of their ribbon-mics, but they don't mention it on their website; in fact the paucity of technical info is somewhat appalling.
The super-large diaphragm indeed results in high sensitivity, but at the cost of placing the HF resonance due to pressure build-up (which is directly related to the diameter) right in the upper-midrange.
I would be very curious to see actual measurements, particularly off-axis.
