Bob and I overdub drums in what we thought was a quirky hotch potch way that I just discovered is quite popular. Bob records backing tracks for his songs in time to an ancient analogue drum machine recorded on a spare track. He brings these in and we copy them to my DAW. We then have an ancient Yamaha DJX that we use as a midi keyboard feeding a Yamaha Motif-Rack ES for sounds. We then overdub new drums on the keys of the DJX. Today I discovered that finger drumming is a well known technique; it was not untill I accidentally came across the AKAI MDP218 and watch a YouTube video that I realsied how advanced finger drumming is.

What sparked this off is I was thinlkng of getting rid of the big bulky DJX and replacing it with a simple smaller midi keyboard, I wondered if playing frums on a mini keyboard would present any problems so I did a search for drum pads and The AKAI and others appeared. However, theyy mostly seem to beUSB types intended for use wqith PC based syths but I would want to continue to use the ES via midi. Is there a good basic drum controller with a midi output?

Cheers

if you have a midi interface, u still can use USB keyboard/controller via DAW.
( ie: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MIDISport1x1 )
in DAW MIDI channel just set
MIDI in: USB keyboard
MIDI out : external synth with MIDI in
add audio channel, to monitor it!

i wouldnt be so sure on that 8)
i have been doing some crazy tunings with your tuner...
super accurate to note, some very interesting harmonies.
Ian: just stretch your fingers, under the rods, his tuner is capable of everything  ;D

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I am not using a computer DAW, I just want to plug it directly  into the midi input of my Yamaha  Motif ES rack.

Roland pad 5. I've got this for sale. The pads are GM conform and can also be assigned with any midi note number. It has no internal sounds but some standard beats on board. It's battery powered and has a single midi out.

Another picture. You can put it onto your knees, it can be played with drumsticks or just with the fingers.  Sensitivity of the pads can be changed.

Is it polyphonic?. I have seen reviews of some of the lower end AKAI MPC series that say they are not polyphonic so you can only use them fro fills and not for beats.

Yes, of course it's polyphonic. You can trigger multiple sounds at the same time.

Excellent. I like the way it is battery powered and has just the one connector. What would be the shipping to the UK?

I have also ordered a Novation Impulse 25 so between the two I should have all the bases covered and the Novation has a bunch of extra features I might one day get around to using.

i have a motif-rack ES too. Great unit, I still think it sounds better than any VSTi I have come across, people still wonder if the piano sounds from it are a real or not.

I also at one point had a Novation Impluse and it has a cool arpeggiator in that when you turn it on, the 8 pads let you turn on or off the arpeggiated notes(and also let you select the velocity depending on how hard you hit the pad).

really handy to have that kind of control when playing around. However with that being said, the arpeggiator built into the motif is great as well.

Unrelated to your question, and almost certainly not to the taste of most people on here, but when I saw the topic of finger drumming I thought of this guy.  No quantize, just drum samples and some other samples on an MPC.  Amazing!
