Repairing/identifying what's wrong with Beyer M81
« on: January 04, 2017, 04:42:13 PM »
I just picked up a pair of Beyerdynamic M81s (M818 as a set) but unfortunately one of them is bad. The other one is ppretty great, though - so great that it makes my think about salvaging the broken one.

The problem is that there is very little output in the range below 250hz or so and also a quite noticeable dip in volume around 1.5khz. But when comparing with the healthy one, I notice that there is roughly the same output level and there is no hum indicating a ground loop.

I know many factors may contribute to these symptoms, but do you have some suggestion where to start in terms of figuring out what's wrong with it?

Check resistance of the output, check wiring.
If it have extra coil inside socket, then measure resistance before it.
