GAtes Sa-39 which tube is the detector tube?

Have a GATES SA-39 Passes signal but is not compressing..which tube is the detector ??

Metal or glass version ?? Does it make a difference??

Between metal and glass versions there is no difference. Yes, metal can look a little strange in comparison with others.

Yes I did some research ...and 1 thing I found is depending on the vintage of the piece you may have to add extra grounding when you use a glass tube because the metal tube has a grounding pin built as part of it. So I ordered an N.O.S. 6h6 RCA metal body..I'll post if that gets the Gates working again.
