Hi everybody,

does anyone have any experience with the Hiller tubes? The MSC-2 was used in the first batches of the M49/M50:

I now have one here (NOS) and i'm not sure if i should use it for a M49 build, or if it would be better to keep  it unused, maybe for  repairing an original Neumann one day, or for reselling it one day if needed.
Would the Hiller tube be an improvement over let's say a 6111 or 5840? And which transformer would fit best?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge guys.

First and nearly all M49 Mics are using 7:1 Transformers, i think the best Transformer is the Haufe T8094 with static Shielding. The Cinemag CM6511 is a good Option for the half price of the Haufe one. Booth Transformers have 7:1 Ratios.

If you dont use the Hiller Tube, the Russian 6s6b-v Tube is for me the best Alternative out there.

MSC2 heater voltage also lower than the AC701... somewhere in the 2 volt range....

Haven't tried the 6111, triode connected 5840 works, 5703 works, 7586 nuvistor works, heard nice things about the Russian tube... Need to try several tubes to find one with low noise and good sonic characteristics....I wonder how many original M49's are still out there with the Hiller tube... and also wonder how many original M49 mics with the Hiller tube were converted to the AC701.

The output transformer does make a difference....  200 ohm mic output... 7:1 turn ratio (49x impedance transformation) puts the primary in the 9k to 10 k ohm range.... also the quality of the materials, lamination steel, winding, etc.

Thanks! I think i will try my MSC2 in a M49 build.
It would be a shame to let it go begging. I know it's a good resale item as-it-is, but you only live once!

Here's to hoping your M49 comes out fabulously with it!

Did you ever build an M49? What ratio transformer did you use for the MSC2?

Did you see Moby's reply about ratios here?
