Hey folks,
I have an Avantone BV-12 that I picked up a few years back. At the moment, it's stock except for the tube, which is a Russian-made Electro-Harmonix 6072A/12AY7. It sounds pretty good, but I'm curious if there's other stuff I could do to really take it up a level, e.g. capsule replacement, better transformer, swapping out other components.
I've heard a lot about the dreaded and contentious C9 and C10 in relation to Avantone mics, but I can't actually see those components on the circuit board. I don't know if perhaps they removed them in a later revision.
I also have no idea what kind of capsule it's using, aside from the fact that it's dual-sided 34mm edge-terminated gold-sputtered Mylar (6 micron), according to the Avantone site. There's also no information about the output transformer.
I've read Brian Fox's very interesting article about BV-12s, but I'm more inclined to tweak it myself for the experience, and so I know exactly what's being changed.
Or would it be easier to start with a cheaper CV-12 in case I screw something up and wreck an otherwise nice microphone?
Cheers,
Dan
