2 channel preamp arrived doa.
Faulty heater supply. Got it up and running but I get pops and clicks on one channel. It sounds like digital clocking errors.
At this point the only obvious thing is a tube socket where one 12ax7 is not sitting properly. I do not want to apply any major force to shove the tube in. More force then usual and could not budge the tube to sit properly so left it alone.
Swapped tubes around and it stays on that channel.
a visual inspection did not yield anything other then no failed resistors or failed capacitors.

I agree with Doug.

Also, if the socket is PCB mount, solder may have crept up the pin preventing proper seating of the tube.  This can actually happen with chassis mount sockets, but IME it is less common.

as suspected by me and confirmed by others,  it was the tube socket.
I managed to unclog the pins and get the tube to sit properly, then a reflow on the socket the noise is gone.  8)
