Passive vs Active Monitors and monitor amps

I have a pair of KH120s which replaced a pair of B&W hifi speakers. I found the balance of the KH120s to be uncannily close to the B&W - so much so that the transition was instantaneous. The thing that surprised me  most was the incredible reduction in distortion in the Neumanns

I know the ear / brain compensates for the failings of speakers all the time but hadn't realised how much distortion we can tolerate from speakers
