No wonder these machines cost a kings ransom back in the day .
The tensioner looks interesting , difficult to see precisely  whats going on ,even though the description is well written. 
In the modern day Cnc with pre programed sequences takes the place of 101cogs wheels and doohickeys.
 
I got a bunch of ceramic coated pulleys ,specifically for small wire winding ,  I was thinking a spool and drag mech from a spinning reel would make a neat adjustable tensioner wheel . Whole thing looks to be back tensioned as well ,so it exerts a certain drag on the wire in the forward direction ,but it also needs to be able to compensate the tension if the  the feed rate of the machine changes suddenly without snapping the wire .

I picked up one of these off Craigslist a while back.  havent messed with it at all yet.    Think it could wind me up some audio transformers or pickups?
