Does anybody know what kind of wire they use in RF coils that has a silver color rather than your standard red enameled copper wire?

You see it on RF coils in the front end also. A few turns o copper wire then a few turns of silver wire.

We are rewind a Marantz IF board  ratio detector.

Here is a p ic showing the gray wire up top,  it does stick to a magnet.

Thanks for for any help!

It is most probably silver plated copper wire (you know, skin effect and so). Be careful, this wire isn't usually coated, so adjacent windings should be moved apart.

I thought it might be silver plated copper also, but the wire is magnetic and was also very springy when compared to the copper wire we took of. Thinking it might be nichrome.

It does have an insulation over it as you have to scrape it to get an ohms reading.

here is a print we did>

It is speculation, but maybe this type of wire is used in order to linearize S -curve and additionally dump the Q of secondary of ratio detector.
Or maybe you should ask Paul :).

we measured the small piece of this wire, about a foot,  it measures 0.006",  we extrapolated the ohms per 1000 ft, comes out to 272 ohms/1Kft  which equals #34 which measures 0.006",

so  not resistance wire,

i think you might be right, it is some type of silver alloy with enough mixture of another element to make it slightly magnetic. it does have a coating, the turns were wound right on top o each other.

Looks like you were right Gus!

Electrisola makes it, used for RF,

comes in #34,  any type of insulation or bare>

how does this plating stuff work?

pretty straight forward, just develop an expression for the complex impedance and use Cramers Rule.
