I came across this this evening:

It is a way of transmitting a crude form of stereo in a mono channel. Ideal for AM radio perhaps?

Whatever happened digital stereo in the AM radio bands??

Interesting but could have localization issues for pitched sounds.

[edit] FWIW back in the 80s my delay based surround sound kit, had a stereo synthesis mode making a pseudo stereo from mono sources using comb filtering. I guess you could try to encode the the mono signal to selectively steer left and right information, but you would be at the mercy of where the combs fall. [/edit]
