An argument I've heard from some folks for at least 15 years.

I've no problem with the name myself, but I've also no problem understanding why some do have a problem with the name.

Whatever keeps the peace, 't's all right with me.  I don't post there anyway.

It's not a very practical name for employees using their computers at work or while surfing on the train with a laptop.

I don't think they will change the name though.  ;D

Many years ago, Experts Exchange was the go-to for IT folks. A friend of mine worked at a computer repair shop that—irony of ironies—used some sort of web monitoring and constantly ran into issues trying to access the URL. Later, they hyphenated the URL.

I never was a member or posted there.  I also never understood that of all the ways to claim their behavior with gear, they choose that one.   But oh well,  as much as I find the idea going overboard and being low hanging fruit in a world with serious issues, seems everyone needs something to complain about.

It's not the name they should change, it's the mean spirit resulting from apparent absence of moderation.
Audio is science, and as such, not every opinion has value.
Might as well call it "Audio fly-paper".

It's a terrible name and I follow very well known artists that have have criticized their name but admitted the usefulness of the forum. They probably limit their base with it.

To be honest I never really thought about it. I know exactly what it means in the context of owning and using audio gear and I suspect everyone else does. Is it any worse than the phrase gear porn?

I feel it is. "Slut" as a word has a long history of being used to shame women specifically, so I can well understand that using it in a forum name would discourage women from using that forum.

The word doesn't hurt me personally as I'm not a woman, but if someone tells me that my language hurts them I'll listen, think, and change. My view is that I've got my experience, and they have theirs - mine doesn't invalidate theirs, and vice versa.

It's really positive that we're discussing this. Thanks for raising awareness of this Pucho - I've signed the petition.  ;D

Of course, being french, I have a different view.  ;)
Indeed, the word is not PC, but it's only the appearences. The deep subject is the mentality a group carries, and to me, it's where GS is criticizable.
A change of name would be like "your sins are forgiven", and an encouragement to continue and persevere.
If it happens, I will not be fooled.

Completely agree that the general discourse on GS is often both toxic and just plain unhelpful these days. A rebrand could be a perfect opportunity to review the moderation policy and generally clean the place up - but I don't see that happening!

False advertising.

Change the name

The problem with GS is not only the general BS that gets posted but the 'undercover' advertising maskerading as advice that pervades the place.

As for the name, I always found it strange and not very clever, not least from a marketing perspective, but personally I couldn't care less.

When I think about it, there is so much wrong with GS that the name is the least of its problems.

Eve Anna Manley is a mod on GS. I wonder what she thinks?

There are systemic boy's club reasons there are no/few women at recording forums.....we had one here years ago, none I've noticed in a decade.  If we have any, they're anonymous.....and this is one of the better places in tone.   I see more women techs and engineers in the field locally than I ever notice at public forums.

Interesting thing. We have a local Russian version of GS, and almost every person with deep tech knowledge is banned there. There is always some formal cause for it, but it's obvious, that the real one is quite simple. Advertisers don't like them.

So nothing wrong with GS. People are making money.

Actually, I heard from a person who was on the inside that the name was a tip of the hat to Roger Nichols, who first coined the term. Those at the purple place found it dumb when it first rolled out but priorities changed and it never was addressed.
