How to measure ribbon tension/resonance?

This is truly a mystery to me and no amount of searching the internet has resulted in any good answers.

I see royer uses a x/y function on an oscilloscope, paired with a signal generator.
I dont understand how this works or how its wired.
Could anyone enlighten me?

Are there other techniques?

I believe what they do is determine the resonant frequency of the ribbon. At resonance, the voltage and current are in phase, which results in a straight 45° Lissajous figure.
It's probably a better method than just checking the impedance maximum, because the impedance curve is very flat.
