I was thinking of building up a pultec-style passive L-C filter section, using iron-cored inductors (2/4H)with paper in oil caps for the bass, and air-cored(10mH) with polystyrene for treble, instead of the original mumetal wound inductors.

Has anyone tried these materials?

A friend of mine modded all coupling caps in his HiFi gear with old Siemens Oil-paper caps. We did some listening tests and I have to admit that this was a huge improvement, though I´m very sceptic with respect to this audiophool-business. But in this application these caps were used to block DC. Your application is only AC work for the caps. There might be a different effect.
