Wow JLM 99V! ...."MP3 Sound file added"
« on: September 01, 2005, 07:21:28 PM »
Well after spending the last 14 hours panel drilling and wiring, one channel of my JLM 99v is up and running.

The only thing I can say is 'WOW!!'

I've always tried acoustic guitar recording but this is something else, with just an AKG C451b around the neck of the guitar the results are amazing.  I can't wait to get the other channels running and try some proper recording.

Thanks again JLM, quick service and a superb product at reasonable cost.

Now just go and build a couple, you won't be disappointed.  :thumb:  :thumb:

PS Now Joe, that compressor kit your're bringing out  Only joking!

I just used mine on drums for the first time today.  I wasn't impressed with the sound of the actual drums, but the pre's sounded awesome.  More experimenting this weekend.  So far it's been hard to make them sound bad. :thumb:

That's the depressing thing about really great gear - you hear exactly how bad your music is.  :green:

Gotta build some of these.  :thumb:

That was also one of the many words that came out of my mouth when I got mine going too. I ending up just sitting there playing for hours, it sounded so good!!

Stop it now!

You are going to cause me to spend money.

The JLM 99v are right after the "GainBloke"
modules I got.

Vikki,

Which transformers did you end up using?

Congratulations on getting a channel going.  Can you post pics?

Peace!

Hi
Well spent a few hours playing and recording different bits and pieces and i'm still stunned, plenty of gain available should work well with ribbon mics i guess but i don't have one to try yet. Brings out the nuances of the room (sounds like a bouncy box) i never noticed that before. Looks a bit like a rats nest at the moment but i'll post some pics when the other channel is completed.
I used the Lundahal 1538 transformer for input and no transformer for output but there's plenty of room in for box output tx's. The 1538 seems to give a very neutral little coloured sound, opamps are running off +-34v. It was built as sort of an economy model in a surplus case, looks a bit like something from the old Russian space programme.  Joe will have a fit if he sees it :green:

OK here goes...one JLM99

Wiring is only a get it up and going, I'm going to put 4 units in this box as finances allow, I think I'll put a couple of different ops in 3 and 4. Well if I can do it anyone can! Just have to drill and paint that box, case is from  a vibration tester machine

Looks like a pretty neat job to me!  Plenty of room on the front panel for graphics     One question:  did you really say you're running at +/-34V   or is that a typo?

Not a typo.  That's typical for a 99V.  I run mine +/- 30.

I went back and listened to my drum tracks from yesterday.  The JLM's on overheads were awesome.  Smooth and detailed.  I want more.  NOW!

Yep they're running on -+34v, Joe suggested this voltage to get the cleanest sound. I hope i got it right.

Nice looking case Vikki, I like it!
How about some sound files?

+/-34v is the ideal voltage to run the 99V, though we regularly run them at +/-24 and +/-28 with no problems and have even tried one in an API eq at +/-15 and it worked and sounded great.

Vikki - Very nice job!

Have you given the JLM 1290 kit a look? Looks like you can fit another 2 preamps in there! 8-)

OK I've got an MP3 or a WAV file to post demonstrating acoustic guitar on the JLM99v - how do I post it?  Can anyone host either of them for me or direct me to a site that can?
