Hello Group - dear parents,

i´ve had many rendevouz with my solder iron during the last time - it takes nearly 9 months from my first contact with gyraf dot dk till now and with the help of you all, especially jakob, kev and NRG Frank who cleared the last doubts and encouraged me to start this thing its finally born and already a workhorse in my studio since 3 weeks. i just have to calibrate this baby, don´t know exactly how to do without an osc. but it just sounds beautyfull. had the chance to make some pictures with a mobiles camera - just to show you this G elevenseventysix. When it´s calibrated it will be racked above the p*teq...n*1.0.7.3.....A-P-I-3-1-2.....La2.... DONT EVER START DIY!! :twisted:

Nice VU! Is that a real UA VU, or is that something you printed? Did you use an input transformer?

Beautiful job!

thanks tubejay, thanks jakob

no, it´s not the real one. It´s a sifam al29 but i work at a print shop, so i made my own vu background. working at the printer´s is a real luck for a DIYer because i can made my PCB layouts on real film, can use the same photo developer chemistry and UV Lamp that is used to produce the printing plates !! :cool:
so i just have to etch the boards at studio. ask your local printer shop if they can UVlight and develop your boards. Its a "5-minutes-thing". maybe they can print your layouts on film. can´t be so expensive....

@tubejay
no i don´t use an i/p x
maybe in the next unit.... but first a pair of ssl :wink:

@jakob
i have solved the hum-problem by doing the well-known-cut. works fine.
now there is left a permanent "hissssss" when unit don´t passes signal. so when the signal stops it slowly appears.
I dont used shielded wires to the XLR/Jacks but they are only 5-6cm long.
can HISSSS be produced by an uncalibrated unit?

you bought the original version and took pictures huh?

:green:

Great built, well done, me jealous again :cry:

Cheers, :sam:

You know, it sounds like what you're hearing might be due to improper gain staging. IE, you might have the makeup gain up higher than unity, or higher than the input signal. It sounds like the compressor is releasing, and then bringing up the noise floor too far. It could also be that whatever it is that you're plugging into the compressor is noisy. However, I'd check the gain staging first.

I finished the SSL comp a couple months ago, it's a great project. I'm hoping to be done with my G1176 by the end of the year. I'm going to use the input transformer though. I LOVE IRON!

Holy christ, that looks amazing.

Can you tell us the secret of your blue light. (part number and how you wired it?) (or is this common knowledge?)

There is a bit of residual hiss in the 1176, but it should be quite low.

Have you compared to any "real" FET-compressor?

This is a generic side-effect common to all FET-compressors (and even more to diode-bridge comps like the Neve), due to the very small allowable signal at the gain reducing element, which calls for high-gain amplification after attenuating. The noise should be less than some 0.1mV though, at unity gain - if it's higer, try swapping the FET's, then maybe try changing the BC107's.

I never had noise problems with the DIY-version.

Jakob E.

no i´d never compared it to any "real" FET. I think my problem is that its not calibrated yet. esp. the "unity gain +1db thing" isn´t done....
I should do the more gain mod and desolder the o/p x,
during operation I have the output nearly full CW to get an acceptable output level. And I should recheck if the input signal isn´t already contaminated. it still needs some time for the final touch...thanks for your hints so far :grin:

@kato
there is no secret about the blue LED. I just wired it to the vu-lamp with a proper resistor between. Its a simple blue LED with plain head, hotglued at the panel. :wink:

@tony dB
yes i bought the original. like everyone does here... i think its just a mod, so i changed the knobs and added the blue light :grin:
thanks for that SamAdams

cheers :sam:

nah! i dont want somebody could think this would be an u.r.e.i. :wink:

the silver frontplate was just an accident, speakon.com send me the wrong - i ordered a black one. looks good anyway...

but next time i´ll try to clone it as good as i can. I allready bought the two switchboards... :green:
