Anyone know of a decent submini that will drop in for either of these?

6072a isn't submini and since is available there's no need to find any replacement.
There's no direct replacement except AC761, which is also rare as 701, also pricey and, from what i know, hard to find good one.
You can substitute it with EF732/5840 tube. Works good enough and probably will need lower cathode resistor - in m49C circuit require 1.6k-1.8k instead 2.2k original value.

Neumann KM64s used a 701 tube, but the US version used a 7586 Nuvistor. Any possibilities?

U47 also used nuvistor replacement but it wasn't good solustion at all 
I don't know if anyone agree with me, but nuvistors doesn't sound so "tube" - they doesn't sound also like FET
I don't say it doesn't sound good i like C12a for example.
