Hi.

I have one of the first ADATs black face, or XT, I bought it around '92.

In time it started clicking, as it took more and more time to turn on.

Finally, for some years, it has been dead ( doesn't turn on anymore ).

I opened it, the power connector is an 8 cable, and the specifics are:

5.75 ( red )  G ( black )  +5 ( purple )  +12 ( yellow )    +5 ( red )    G ( black )  G ( black )    -12 ( blue )

I would like to use it as optical A/D or D/A only, I have no need for the SVHS tape mechanism.

Question: Couldn't I substitute the original power supply with an atx power supply
( which has G, +5, +12, -12 ), and which I have some spares, and if so, how do I make it turn on without a motherboard? Where can I wire a switch to control on/of ( maybe in that four cable ( two black, two yellow ) connector?

Otherwise, can anyone indicate me a suitable power supply? The voltages seem common enough.
( but for the 5.75 )

Any help on this subject would be great.

Also any ADAT circuit schematics are welcome, haven't found any yet.

Thanks for the attention.

Open the supply, find the switchmode driver chip, replace the small electros around it. Replace the electros on the supply outputs. Check the 2 watt droppers for the switchmode chip.

Those Blackface....if they've been powered on for weeks, and you turn them off, they might not turn back on. If they've been off a long time, they might not power on.  If they get cycled daily, they never seemed to fail.

ATTENTION ALL ADAT USERS!!! ATTENTION ALL ADAT USERS!!!

( Particularly those like me that HAD dead ADATS - First it starts clicking before turning on, then never does turn on )

With the FANTASTIC help of this forum I was able to bring my dear original ADAT back from the "forever off" land.

I used a regular ATX power supply, bypassing the ADAT's own PS. I connected all power cables according to color ( the same on the ADAT as the ATX PS ). The 5.75 had a red cable which I took to be compatible to the ATX's +5 red cable. The rest was all the same ( ground black, yellow +12, blue -12, purple +5SB )

I connected green to black to have the PS on, turning it on/off through the back switch.
I particularly would like to thank GDIY member PRR for showing me how.

So if you have an ADAT that doesn't turn on, this is an easier way to fix it than re-capping the PS, Plus you can just swap ATX PS if it goes bad.

I have to say that this, my one and only ADAT, was the basis for my first studio.
I got it years before I had my first computer. Just to have it light up ( and have the front face buttons all work accordingly ) brings a smile to my face.

Note that I don't have any ADAT VHS tapes left, and just plan to use it as A/D.

So there you have it. GroupDIY, YOU ROCK! SO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

P.S: I'm leaving it on to see if anything goes wrong. So far so good. It's been off for more than 10 years, so the juice can only do it good. Any changes I will post. Otherwise, it's a success.

Back in the day, it was always easier to replace than repair, repair didn't always work.

NEWSFLASH ( for those following )

I just discovered there is a 2nd power connector underneath, seems to take the power to the DAC board. Right now the ADAT is lighting up normally but is still not receiving audio through the analog inputs ( the optical out led connector is lighting up, though ).

More to come.

EXTRA! FULLY FUNCTIONAL AT LAST!

I haven't plugged it to a computer yet, but having  linked BOTH internal connectors to the ATX ps, now it is receiving audio through the analog ins.

Once I actually record with it I'll post a final msg, but as far as I can tell, it is finally fully functional, so for those that have ADATs lying around, this may be a way to put them to good use.
Just be ready to do a lot of cable "braiding" ( that's how I connected it )

Once again, thanks GDIY for the support. Cheers!

P.S: Removing the PS board leaves a big open area inside the chassis.
I wonder if eventually I shouldn't use it for some fancy circuits ( Germanium filters? ). Just saying...
