The amount of pure alcohol that the average Russian adult consumes annually has fallen a whopping 38 percent to 11.1 liters since 2007, thanks mainly to better public health policies. Russia, which used to be #1 in the global boozing rank, is now ninth, behind countries including France, Ireland, Czech Republic, and Lithuania (which is now in the top spot.)

From Gzeromedia.    This Ian Bremmers Newsletter.

I know my alcohol intake has lessened in the last 5 years greatly.

This is the time of the year to review habits, mostly our bad ones.

I am not a fan of new years resolutions, but if you do, keep them small and easy to keep.

After success with small ones then consider harder ones,  or not.

I heard in some places in continental Europe the authorities have a means of testing what emerges from the toilets for metabolites of various drugs , there was a few studies conducted in Skiing towns in the Alps I believe , the average for cocaine came out at several lines per head and the stats for alcohol usage were off the scale too .

No surprise Ireland made the honours list either ,
Homelessness and drinking has led to a new level of violence  and intimidation on the streets of my city  in the last few years ,
I do know one Lithuanian , strong on the drink for sure  ;)

Testing sewage is not a new concept and yes they find lots of evidence of drug use in the west.

Of all the habits that are harmful to yourself, and possibly others, I think online gambling is one that will become a serious problem if it has not already. For starters I think it should be treated like smoking and banned from TV adverts. Second it is ripe for higher taxation. The woman who set up one online gambling site in the UK paid herself £1 million A DAY  in the last year.

Oh, and free Viagra for the over 60s please.

Happy New Year everyone.

Cheers

Ian

Someone explained a bit to me about how the whole online poker thing worked onetime  , its like getting people to flush their money down the toilet ,
As far as the wider effects of regular bookie's services online , your hooked up to the gambling wheel of fortune 24/7 now by smart phone, the gambling and drinking men no longer need to leave the booozer to place a bet , accumulator football bets on the big match days are  popular it seems , the internet itself is addictive , cross that with old fashioned gambling you have people on a hook , you can play them for all their worth .
