I store all the public documentation for my projects on my Google drive. But recently Google has messed with the security settings which means that all the links to project documentation on my website no longer point to public access of the documents. Instead the user has to request access from me and I gave to grant it which is PITA for us both. So I am looking for an alternative host that will allow me to include permanent unchanging links to public data nosted there. I have a dropbox account and an MS One, but I was wondering what other easy to use and of course free options are out there?

Cheers

When I made the move to cut anything Google out of my life I chose to use Nextcloud. Actually I host my own instance of it but there are free accounts which allow you to do the same stuff as with Google Drive. Sharing public links, office documents, etc.

I maybe don't need this. According to Google all the files linked are publicly accessible so it may just have been finger trouble on the part of a small number of individuals. I would be grateful if someone would check you can access the docs on my website, especially the grounding101.pdf file in the theory folder.

OK that looks good. I had a request today for EZTubeMixerRoutingandMixing.pdf which is in a sub-folder of the EZTubeMixer folder. Maybe its just sub-folders that have a problem? Can someone check that one for me please?

THanks rock. I guess I can leave it as it is. It is probably just finger trouble on the part of a few people trying to access the docs. I did notice they appeared to be asking for permission to edit the file so maybe that is the cause.

Same here!

I run my own instance of nextcloud. Installed it on an old pc motherboard. Works like a charm!

Trouble might arise when someone without a google drive account tries to access it .

Ok I just tried to access the google docs on your site via pc .
I get a browser/os update message and a cookie pop up from google .
Privacy Badger also detects 6 trackers all part of Google , unless 2 of these trackers are allowed the entire site doesnt display , drive.google.com and www.gstatic.com ,

The worrying thing about all this is that it seems Google have moved the goal posts for people to access documents that were supposed to be in the public domain , playing the long game they stand to accrue vast amounts of intelectual property .

Ive used a few free file upload services for one off jobs like transfering audio over the net for remote working but I didnt need persistance . Some sites allow you specify the persistance of the file , others issue you a URL and a code to take the files down if and when the need arrises .

As far as protection of intellectual property goes I dont know which is the best option . You could password/zip the contents of each file before upload and simply provide the unlock code on the webpage next to the file link . Its not fool proof but it doesnt have to be , It just means the raw files arent doing the rounds in cyberspace . The level of encryption is upto yourself . There might be a way to get the file upload service to generate a unique access code when a person clicks the download buttons on your page .
Sounds like theres a bit of homework and reading of small print to figure out the best option.
