So, as per my other LDC84 mic post, I'd been foolishly inspired to build up a few mics jusssst pre baby for my second child... a year later, and a small window of opportunity, and I'm done!!!!...

So my second pair is a coup;le of of D-87's, from dany / poctops...

* D-87, from poctops
- Again, excellent quality pcb
- "guide" is a little more cryptic as it's via various thread here and there... not even close to impossible, just takes a little searching /reading.
* Capsulke: ... take a breath... a big deep breath. So I used a JLI 86u
- It's isolated backplates
- It's EDGE terminated... and much horror aside, I wired it up, and closed my eyes ready for the world to implode... and it didn't... Existance persists :)
- It has, from my rudimentary investigations, a similar high freq bump that needs filtering similar to a K87... I jumped in and gave it go...
* Xfmr: CM-13113 (cinemag)... Experience was fine, but not... dunno... feel like I was pissing the rep off with questions... I only emailed 3 times, but felt I wore out my welcome lol... either way, it's cinemag, so it's "good enough" :)

* Body - SYT-5, direct from supplier
-They were great... sent me mic bodies but not the mounts (that I'd ordered) and got worried there might be a bit of back and forth to get them... but no, just a quick "sorry" and a week later they were here
- Quality - well, I don't know everything about grill sizes and blah, but they are solid, very nice quality and the end result is great... I think it's a solid option for this build, and so do most people :)...

End result....?

Well, after the the "very full" but nice sounding LDC84's I built, I recorded these and thought they sounded a bit thin... then I recorded again, and again.. nothing changed but I realised (of course) I'd built two diffferent mics... listening "properly" and open-minded... I realised these are fckn insanely good lol... they are incredibly low noise, the capules to me are... well, they sound great. Again subjective, but theres a high presence without sharpness, there's a little "scoop" feeling.. not sure where it is at the moment, but for now it sounds great... and there's nice bottom end too... They sound classy, and instant-mix in terms of eq... I've spent most of today putting them through acoustic guitar sessions.... not sure how they go with other stuff, but... the more I play, the more I like it...

Here's a simlar vibe acoustic guitar take to the LD84 I just posted in another thread...

These sound noticeably less honky than your LDC84 sample. Pretty sure you already know this, but the obvious upgrade for these would be some Arienne K87s.

Good job on these. Building mics is fun, isn't it?

Absolutely... Kinda daunting at times, but very satisfying.

Yeah, I put a bit more time into the micing these two as well, but they definitely sound, as you say, less honk lol... the ldc84s do have a very full sound, with lots of low mids, but i really like them... might update that example at some point. Either way, they're both very usable and different pairs which is nice!

I'd love a shoot out opportunity against other caps to get a feel (as in hands on at my studio), but for now it's certainly just a nice feeling to have these built and sounding nice!

I'd actually ordered arienne k87s, but there were supply issues at the time and Arienne was kind enough to offer a refund as it had been a few months and she wasnt sure how much longer itd be. Very good service. I just bit the bullet and threw these JLI86us in... I'm pretty damn happy with them... been thinking I might buy some k87s at some point and either build a new pair or hack these JLIs into a new project.

SYT-5's direct from the supplier?. . . . source?
http://www.shuaiy.com/contact.asp

Shuaiyin in China make these... I think I just used their contact page email...

Just mention your diy and only want X number... they miiiight not have spares in stock, but assume by now they know its a popular diy and probably do(!)... they also had a u47 style, and maybe a few others available (which I didn't buy).
