FWIW I don't care for the 737 on much except bass and guitar.... Seems like everyone has an 87 and a 737 these days....

Now the party's over I'm so tired...
Then I see you coming out of nowhere...

the avalons are all pcb based ,
and super complex ,

one of the most beautiful layout and construction designs.

imho .

building an la-2 or a pultec would be like a summer walk in compairison.

I've never liked Avalon gear.

Inside, the PCBs are wonderful quality, but I'm not a fan of the compressors or mic pres.

-And their meters look nice from the front, but are some of the poorest, cheap-ass meters I've ever seen.

They have nice knobs, nice front panel and nice-*looking* meters.

So people like them I guess. -It's just very ordinary stuff, dressed-up to look impressive is all I think.

I should sum it up I suppose:

"Any Avalon?"

No.

Never had my hands on one myself, but a studio we recorded years ago had two, the 747 ? It may have been our music, but I recall looking at those beautiful solid looking boxes and wondering why they couldn't mean more for our music

The cool Avalon stuff is no longer made. They used to make awesome vertical Mic pre, eq's and comps as part of this crazy custom rack system. That stuff was cool as well as the the M3/E3 sony modules. However the current line is nothing more then fancy banjo center window dressing. I have used the 2 channell mic pre, 2 channel compressor, 737, Di, and 747. They all sounded boring to me. The only thing I liked about the 737 was that the bass player could be in the control room during over dubs and I didn't have to make a headphone mix. No Stereo buss to headphones for me.
Anyway other then that one session I never liked their stuff and find it over priced. But I wouldn't turn away if it was offered as a free be. A free unit is still a free unit.

I think they look absolutely tasteless, it just screams out "I'm a space shuttle! teenagers, buy me!"

With all of the information regarding classic equipment and re-interpretations thereof cataloged and stored on this site, why would anyone bother?
You can create a channel strip from a HUGE a la carte menu of equipment, complete with schematics, BOM's, parts sources, and even kits. An incredible amount of effort was exerted by those who have completed "Kid A" of a classic piece, and then there are multiple huge threads regarding what others did afterwards.
Search Avalon here and serious people just yawn about it. I have done b-face mods on them and do appreciate the quality of the construction and internal design, love the lighted switches, but would DIY something else.
the compressor in the 737 is a bit screwy for many things, but in their defense I like the 2055 EQ on vocals, and found the best DI'd acoustic guitar sound I've ever heard with a Larrivee and their U5.
...and a good player.....probably

Seems it will be an interesting DIY...

Do it and tell us about your progress. I´m sure a lot of people here would jump on the train if you do the work and then share it
what you really want to do is DIY a mercenary 737
I saw "$hite on a Stick" in person at NYC AES some years ago. They still have the stick ya' know.

No thanks.

I was at the same AES. Mercenary almost got kicked off the exhibit floor for that.
