Sorry about the Necromancer bump.
I got to keep one of these from a studio that was closing.
I put some General Electric (used/old) tubes into the VTP-1 I had laying around.
Immediately a nicer sound.
I do have a TAC Scorpion console which uses SSM2015 preamps, so I'm familiar with the chip. I like it's dark sound. (the SSM2017 being a later version/revision) So I'm leaving that.
One thing that struck me while reading all these bad reviews (which, at first glance I did support); is regarding the "Post-Tube-Stage EQ"...
I think it's fine, because if you connect the two preamps in Serial, you get a Post-Tube EQ on Channel 1, feeding into Channel 2 making it Pre-Tube there. So think of Channel 1 as the Input Stage and Channel 2 as the "Driven Stage".
Then the Post-Trim control makes sense.
Pimp it up with some nicer knobs and use it as a mono tube processor.
Just my .02 ¢ents
ps. look at the EQ curves in the manual (the Lo and Hi Shelves) -they vary wildly with settings.
