hello folks,

short and quick - do any of you have any tips for bending the leads correctly on a TO-92 package to fit in a layout that has 2 holes at the "back" of the package, and one nearer the front?

My most recent work has a lm317m regulator, and the library i'm using doesn't have each leg inline with each other. The devices I received from mouser has all 3 legs inline with one another. Some cursing and frustration took place.

Do you guys have any suggestions around this? Do you have any suggestions that would scale well to a small production run? Or should I just create my own library for this?

a nice example of this i found on google images: http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~quiddity/images/audio/vinyl/DC_F_layout.gif

look in the top right hand corner.

haven't seen one in TO-92 ...

that's his whole problem, he doesn't seem to have a TO220 package in his library...

as far as I know Rochey uses Eagle ...
In the Transistor-NPN package there are vertical and horizontal mounted TO220 packages, and 10 different TO92 footprints.
for DIY the TO92 "triangle" footprint is better then all in one row (more space), and it is easy enough to bend the legs without any special tool.

Rochey, does this help?

I think he is talking about LM317L . It's packed in TO-92. If yes Rochey, then you can edit the existing LM317L device  in Eagle library ,save with another name and make it exactly as you like.  ;)

For real production you get the parts with the right lead form, people have been bending to-92 leads with needle nose pliers as long as there have been to-92s.

I have seen machines for doing some common lead forms, but not that one, and unless you are doing a bazillion just bend em like beckham.

Hello folks, thanks for so many quick replies.

Yes, I'm using the LM317L, in the TO-92 package.
From what I can see, depending on what container you order the devices in (bulk bag, tape or ammo box) will change what shape the component legs will be.

A quick look here:
http://focus.ti.com/lit/ml/msot002a/msot002a.pdf

shows that the parts either come with straight leads (bulk bag) - then only the middle lead needs to be bent forward.
In the tape & ammo box, it's  alittle different though - it looks like they bend the left and right leads at an angle.
What a pain to assemble with!

Times like this - i'm really tempted to go to SMD.

Is production being handled by pick-n-place machines?

If not, just bend the middle leg slightly backwards and slide it in.

If yes, just edit the part library in Eagle. (or make a duplicate, copy the part to your own RocheyLibrary and edit it there.)
