Is it possible to build a useable bare bones (stripped down) 1176?

What I mean by this is:
-No Meter (listen with my ears only)
-No push button switches (just whatever could sub in as the cheapest option - maybe mini toggles??)
-No transformers (just put this between gain stages in my EZ1290 build)

Is this possible?

Ok... I just decided I'd try it and see! I can't see why it wouldn't work so if you have a reason, please feel free to interject.

Now that I decided to go for it, does anyone have a clickable parts list/shopping cart add to Mouser/Digikey etc?

I purchased the Transistors tonight. I have a stock of resistors and capacitors so I won't need many of those. The Transistors and Pots (including trimmers) are specific to the 1176 Compressor project so I ordered those. Here's a Mouser Project list (Bill of Materials BOM) for those who'd like one with just those specific items:

Transistors had to be subbed and I did some homework to find crosses that were recommended. If anyone wants to argue with these substitutions feel free. Here's what I subbed in:

M.Nats original BOM called for and I substituted:
BF245A --- 2N5458
BC107 --- 2N5088
BC560 --- 2N5087

At the time of the order, this ended up costing $17 and change. Hows that for bare bones?

Of course that assumes you have a stash of resistors and caps (which are good to have on hand and much cheaper to buy in bulk anyways). I buy resistors by the 100 and get them at around a penny a piece. Caps are a little more but still a lot cheaper in bulk once again.
