Need some advise I think I was told somewhere back to not use spray contact cleaner because it would disolve the lubricating grease Wil

Davens usually don't need cleaning. Maybe after long retirement, you'll need to work them a while to scrub dust and tarnish, but in regular use they are pretty self-cleaning.

Hold down the tab, rotate the back cover, remove.

Wipe the contacts with a very soft very clean cloth.

Gently lift the brush, put a fresh new dollar bill between brush and contacts, and pull it out.

If it needs any more attention than that, something is wrong.

From Audio Engineering magazine sometime in 1948 article called Care and feeding of stepped attenuator. Article states that cleaning of contacts should be done with pencil eraser. I use typewriter eraser, works well.

After cleaning contacts they should be lightly lubricated with Davenoil which I have not been able to find but vasoline is recomended to be a good substitute.

Hope this helps

Chris

The wire wound resistors are pretty fragile after 40 years or so. The cleaner might disolve the wax on the wires etc.
