The Rude Tube IVORY

The Rude Tube IVORY is a very simple, easy to build single tube booster (russian 6N2PEV or 12AX7) with 3 band tonestack based on the famous Fender Blackface guitar amp. You can listen to some audioclips made with my first p2p prototype in the 1st post of my Rude Tube thread. More audioclips with the new build will be provided later.

Right now Zayance and me are building prototypes with the newly designed pcb. We had a vivid and very pleasant conversation during the last three month and the outcome is the impressive pcb panel below. We are working on a manual and a bill of material in order to provide you with the best support we can give.

I would call the IVORY a tube project for beginners who want to build a very versatile, high voltage tube tool with a wide range of sounds reaching from clean & creamy to crunch & dirty. The tonestack performs very well especially in the mid frequency range. Along with the mono mainboard and a universal three rail tube psu you get a lot of extra tools like relay bypass pcb, 6 x lorlin 1/12 pcbs  for building stepped pots and much more in a very sturdy "all inclusive" panel.

Pictures of my build:

Hi, my IVORY has got a new frontpanel. Thanks a lot Frank!! Still need to drill some holes for the backpanel and tidy up the wiring.

The IVORY works!!!

!!! The tube socket must be soldered in as the very last part !!! Screw terminal for heater supply has to be mounted on solder side, first ! Screw terminal for B+ can be mounted either from component side or from solder side

Update: Powered up the PSU today! It´s performs flawlessly!! Going to wire the pots and hook up the mainboard soon!

Documents:

-  Preliminary Manual with BOMs & schematics (mono version): http://www.xaudia.com/xmanuals/PreliminaryDocs140614.pdf  (thanks, Stewart!)

Shopping cart file for www.Musikding.de . It´s for the mono version. Powertransformer and isolation kit for the regulators
are not in the cart. You must create an account and be logged in in order to import the txt file !! Check the list before ordering:
I removed the shopping cart list from Musikding, since I don´t want you to have the trouble with wrong parts as I had. (They delivered three times the same WRONG WIMAs. They must be kidding)

- PSU BOM: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al25JwaqoqLrdE4xZlRqX05YR1J6aWtnalNGcUNRYlE&usp=sharingLink#gid=0

- IVORY mainboard BOM: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al25JwaqoqLrdFl6dGFrb1NGQnJSa3A3NTRkb2Mxbnc&usp=sharing#gid=0

- Main + Extras BOM: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al25JwaqoqLrdHRkaUZvSEpPU2xzUExMcGw0Z2h1U3c&usp=sharingLink#gid=0

- Lorlin stepped pot BOM: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al25JwaqoqLrdGFUdGJ2MW01WmRLeW5rZlVSVHNXUVE&usp=sharing#gid=0

- Frontpanels: I´m going to inform Frank from http://www.frontpanels.de . Personally my favourite man for frontpanels. Distance between the holes is 35mm. So if you want to use the Lorlin pcbs, you don´t need to break the individual Lorlin pcbs. Before ordering please verify the height of your enclosure and check if one or two rows of Lorlin pcbs fit in your enclosure. Frank makes costum encloses as well.

How to order pcbs for the IVORY:

We made a first batch of 10 panels. Sold out!!. If you interested in a 2nd run, then claim your interest in Zayance WM thread or send him a pm.

http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=53011.0

With this panel you´ll get:

- 1x pcb (mono version) of the IVORY,
- 1x pcb of universal, 3 rail tube psu
- 6x pcbs for Lorlin 1/12 stepped pots
- 1x pcb capacitor discharging tool
- 1x pcb primary voltage selector (230V or 115V)
- 2x pcbs regulator off board mounting tool
- 1x pcb true bypass relay board (mono)

That makes 13 pcbs in total in one panel. If you want to build a stereo version of the IVORY, you´ll need 2 panels. You can use the spare tube psu pcb for other projects (there will be more!!!). People who only need the tube psu, relay board or Lorlin stepped pot pcbs have a very nice IVORY pcb to experiment with (you could use it as a preamp stage for a DIY guitar amp or whatever).

Stay tuned!!!

Here is a kind of checklist of things to keep in mind while building the IVORY:

1. powertransformer: If using a transformer with 6,3VAC you don´t need to stuff the heater rail on the psu board. You can supply the tube with 6,3VAC directly from the transformer. In order to reduce hum you must twist the wires

2. tube socket: The tube socket must be soldered in as the very last part !!! Screw terminal for heater supply has to be mounted on solder side, first ! Screw terminal for B+ can be mounted either from component side or from solder side

3. input/output transformers: Today I tested some transformers. Basicly you can take any decent 1:1 transformer. I did not really do any exact measurent but my ears tested the following transformers as fine:

Edcor XSM10K/10K, Edcor WSM10K/10K, Lundahl LL1540, Lundahl LL1528, Haufe RK310-2, Haufe RK255-1, Sowter 3528 or what you have avaílable. Here is a rough drawing how to hook up the transformers:

to be continued

Documents added: Manual (beta version) with instructions, BOMs for various suppliers and schematics for PSU, mainboard etc.
thanks a lot Tony!!!

I tried to download the PDF, following your link, but I get: Preliminary-Docs.pdf.exe. My anti-virus software blocks the download, because the file looks like a virus!

Just tested it. There are more than one download button. Take the one in the center. See attached picture.

Hey guys,

This file server is not so great and tries to make you install their own software. I now have unknown files on my computer!

I can host your PDF for you. No fees, no adverts, just some web space.

Cheers

Stewart

Cool! I just picked up a couple of these for a stereo version.

Any specs on audio transformers I might use?

Thanks!

Hi,
audio transformers will be tested when I have finished my pcb built. I´ll report back about my findings. Happy soldering and a lot of fun with your IVORY.

Kool, sounds like the circuit out of my 1965 Band Master Guitar amp.
(Bought new as a teenager, I mowed a lot of lawns to pay for it)
Too many unfinished projects in the works , NOW. But I'm in for a
Stereo pair, Will there be a another run ?
