The fourth and fifth positions give you a very basic choice of timing, single release or double. They were designed for the music played on the radio at the time, not how we record music with a compressor today 70 years later.

Single and Double are both useful concepts in a tube comp, but changing the timings or making them variable is separate from this switch.
