Looking for some thoughts on an 8(-n)x1 passive mixing network for a mic-pre.
I have been thinking of a mic/line/passive channelstrip (to use for example in a small modular DIY mixer) with an additional selectable 8 channel passive inputs.
Something along the lines of 10k series resistors for 8x +/- line-level sources bus'd together and paralleled with ~220R which then would feed into the mic input transformer via a Mic/Line/Passive switch. DB25 for the passive inputs, and xlr's for Mic/Line. The thought is that each channelstrip of your mixer could sum up to 8 channels and then be bussed to your active summed L/C/R.. Providing a max of 128 channels at mix on your small-frame 16 channel mixer or break-out/normal your passive summing across the 16 or less console channels as needed with your various pieces of outboard inserted appropriately.
My question is if I have eight possible inputs to the summing network and only four sources are currently patched in, should I do anything with the "floating-passive-inputs? ie; switch to gnd, disconnect from the input pins & load with 100R, etc. The idea would be to have a pcb mounted dip switch or jumpers to semi-permanently configure the number of passive inputs for that particular console channel.
Thanks,
jonathan
