in the latest incanation of cubase there is a plug in called "soft clip" now its a great sound tool when used in the right places. It simply consists of an out level and input gain, so I'm assuming that this would be simple to make in terms of hardware, just a few transistors?
Being a bit of a noob, I'm just wondering if you know of any schematics for just such a box, in stereo of course.
Any suggestions from you guys would be greatly appreicated.

Well, I guess it is emulating the Apogee "SoftLim" function on their A to D converters, which is a DBX vca if I am not mistaken. Bit of a one horse pony. I used to use it a lot. Got much better things nowadays!

It's a clipper. Uses some Ge and Si diodes to get a softer-than-hard-but-still-kinda-hard character.

There a version with a few resistors strung from the top of the diode tree to various points further down, that should soften it further. It's a good simple building block to tinker with, anyway.
