I have seen the circuit attached is used in crossover. It is used for compression driver protection. I like to know does it really work?

It works somewhat...at the expense of having a 4 ohms resistor permanently in series with the driver, reducing the efficiency by 4dB.
Consider it as a basic circuit, that needs to be tuned to your actual application (choice of driver, crossover characteristics).

if you are brave, replace the in-series 4ohm resistor with a fuse, and the shunt 4ohm resistor with a straight wire.

triac will act like a crossbar.

it's Plug'n'Pray.
