Converting mic pre to line amp

I know this is usually the opposite of what people usually do, but I'd like to have a line amp to use as a make up gain device for some of the passive devices I use.  Can I do this by changing the transformer from mic input to line input?

That would change the sound of the unit (and you like the sound, since you're thinking of using this?)

Make a simple pad - e.g. the one in the line input of the G9 - that's probably the simplest and best solution.
