anybody got some info , reading material on dc-dc converters ?
i‘m thinking basic stuff , how do they work , whats a common fault ?

Common faults? Depends on the design. Off-line (ie. mains-powered ones) ones can often have a dried-out "startup cap", a 10-47uF electrolytic on the controller chip's supply rail. Most small-to-medium power off-line supplies will be a flyback design.
 
Startup cap, secondary side caps, blown MOSFET, most times taking the controller down with it; less frequently, rectifier diodes conked out.

Big Clive put out a handy video just the other week, about some high-voltage-input power supplies (meant for 3-phase mains). Same standard flyback design, though.
