In the discussion about Active Ribbon circuits, I make the point that for 'normal' ribbons with a 200R nominal Zo, it would be more sensible to make a dedicated Ribbon Preamp using some of the excellent devices like THAT1510 or TI INA163.

But making up a complete preamp to approach the 1nV/rtHz performance of  THAT 1510, TI INA163 etc is a major undertaking.  In particular, the PCB, wiring and construction has major implications in Low Noise design.

Easier to modify an existing preamp into this, reducing noise & increasing gain rather along the lines of a special order Millenia Media HV3 or AEA TRP.

I've put a note describing exactly this on M-Audio DMP3 (<$100 on eBay)

My thanks to Zunda for being the trial builder.

Comments please, especially from anyone who wants to try this.

The modified DMP3 gets within 1.3dB of theoretical noise performance for a nominal 200R ribbon and is quieter than practically all the DIY preamps running around.

My Active Ribbon circuit is only worthwhile if you have a nominal 30-50R ribbon like the original STC4038

Hi! I spent a long time thinking about the same before i realised it was easier to add a line stage after mic preamp.

I'm currently building a 1u 8 channel of THAT 1512 mic preamps and i added this:

Add an external pot instead of internal trimpot and you have -10 to +18dB balanced output control

60dB of mic preamp gain plus 18dB of line stage is more than i'll use!!!
