One trick I often still use (and I do have a hot air station) is to lie a piece of tinned copper wire along all the pins of the component to be removed. Then flood the whole row with solder. The copper spreads the heat to all of them without the risk of melting anything nearby. I have removed old CPU and EPROM, chips 28 pins and above, with this technique. On chips, do one side at a time. for "solid" items like switches, use a copper wire on each row and either move the iron from one row to the other to keep them both molten, or grab a friend and a second iron to keep both sides hot.
