I have a few broken capsules laying around and since I wanted to dip my toes into skinning for quite a while I'm looking for ideas or sources for tensioning jigs. I've seen quite a few different contraptions all over the forum but I'm really not sure what works well and what doesn't. If anyone could share some info on how you built yours or maybe a source to buy one, I'd be very happy.

Right, I've seen this one before but I'm not sure how the diaphragm is being held there. Is it in between two metal rings? Are they machined to be press fit?

Not sure, i just tape the mylar to the weight with a regular tape, nothing fancy but works like a charm. The tension you apply is not that critical, the final tension is determined by the weight. I use this readily available 250gr weight, but i had to trim it down to about 100gr. I add tiny magnets if i need more than 100gr.

Okay, then I'm going to search for a weight similar to that and try it myself, looks easy enough. Thank you very much for sharing!

Diaphragm tensioning jigs are dead simple. Just three pieces that thread together and spinning the threads together tightens the diaphragm. I've been meaning to make models of them so I can order more for a couple months but I haven't yet. Thanks for reminding me

Thank you very much for all of your insightful replies. This looks way more sophisticated and I'd really like to try something like that out, but unfortunately I have no means to machine that myself at the moment (although I'm trying to change that in the future). If one of you mic gurus would sell me one of yours, I'd be very happy, otherwise I'll try the simple solution first.

The suggestion by kingkorg using weights will work fine. This is basically how Neumann tunes theirs.

Yup, I'll definitely start with that and then upgrade the jig in the future. It would just be easier to test and reproduce the effect of different tensions with the more sophisticated version.

In the LDC capsule thread this article was posted that tells you how to build a tensioning jig.

"They look(s) like this… there are three pieces. Two (that) hold the Mylar and another threaded ring (the) sets the tension/tuning (that - probably "and" would work better here) screws on from the (back - underside). "

Oh Tim, Please keep pointing out my mistakes in spelling and grammar.. It truly shows what kind of person you really are. At least my ck12 is an accurate one.

it's like two kids in a playground fight every time...take it off the board...nobody here finds it important or helpful, you're both just being disrespectful to everyone reading the thread

As the saying goes, there are many ways to skin a cat. I could probably invent a dozen ways of tensioning diaphragms, taking my inspiration from drums, tablas and darboukas. That would not give an answer to the crucial question of how much tension and how to control it.
Maybe it's time to close this thread, since it turns into a lame pissing contest.

I don't see the pissing contest you refer to but I have altered my post since Eric objected to being quoted to explain my attached illustration.
