Did the Buchla 292 low pass gate produce sound with no Control Voltage applied?
Simulation states a control voltage is required to turn on the leds of the Vactrols.
Also Having a VCA mode.

If you turn the level pots manually they open the gates without any externally applied cv… is that what you are asking?

indeed, didn't know the offset adjustment was a knob but a trimmer.
the 150K before the "offset" knob is a bit steep according to simulator.

the basic model is 999us$
https://buchla.com/product/292/the deluxe model is 1199us$
https://buchla.com/product/292e/the are using China made vactrols or DIY?
The original U.S. company that made the vactrols does still exist, but they are not offering vactrols on their website.
Although other light depends electronics, but solid state

someone cloned this (as did others)

I came up with with a circuit in solid state had to compare with the Buchla low pass.
These vactrols are quite expensive, but the retarding effect of the led makes it cool sounding.

once i made Vactrol using a Blue led, LDR and serves as a cheap VCA.
using black electrician tape.

works really well, but does not have the ringing behavior.
