I have seen OPA404, a quad DIFET opamp at £12.70+VAT, and OPA2107, a dual DIFET opamp at £13.56+VAT in the Farnell site. Now those are hefty prices. Are we looking at really special opamps here?

The DiFET opamps that Burr-Brown has are made using a more expensive fabrication process. That's about all I know unfortunately.

Opamps with DIFET inputs offer very low DC offset, exceptional DC amplification performance, high slew rates, minute input current noise and relatively low input voltage noise.
This does not directly translate into "better" audio performance.

I use the opa404 and opa627 frequently and DO hear a difference in sound from many others, although it takes replacing ALL the amps in a channel and A/B comparison. the sound is much smoother with less edge, and I can say that they also tend to have more detail than others. they do tend to oscillate like crazy if you let them.
