This is simple.
I discovered it the other day, during a recent earthquake.

I suppose I could encase it in a plexi box, and put a sensor near it's tip, that would trigger a sound.

I expect that might double as a tornado detector for use in MS.. 

My personal philosophy on such matters if you don't notice there was one, you probably don't need to know there was one.

maybe you can add an accelerometer somewhere and do something with it. maybe you can record some cool rumble or get some impulses for a strange convolution reverb  ;D

That reminds me of an old friend of mine who had moved out west relating his first tremor experience.
He said it took him a few seconds to realize that whatever he had just ingested was not causing the room to take a walk  :D!
