...thoughts on best, easiest, most convenient and/or foolproof ways to protect your bits.......and pieces from ESD? i thought my wrist strap was sufficient but i'm beginning to wonder, and a poor little innocent IC may have paid dearly for my assumption.

I repaired an Eventide H910 last night.  It didn't even dawn upon me to be grounded until I was in the middle of callibration.  All's well that ends well.  As an electrician by day, it's 2nd nature to be ungrounded.

I like to have an anti-static work surface. Get a large piece of sheet copper or galvanized steel. Put that on your work table. Connect it to Earth ground. Then put a thin cardboard sheet down to work on. They even make anti-static conductive cardboard sheets. They're usually black and they have a connection to go to Earth. Everyone has their own preference. DW.

A lot of static problems are down to the clothing/footware worn by the user.
Keep to wool/cotton for clothing, and leather for shoes, the static is naturally disipated,
that isn't to say AS precautions are unnecessary.

I don't wear any synthetic clothing at all. Everything is all cotton. I know my shoes very well too. Some of them are  for sunny, some of them are for rainy days. It takes a long time for the sole to break-in to become reasonably low resistance.  I actually have a pair of conductive shoes that came from a Navy surplus. Great aid in committing suicide by electrocution. Guaranteed resulting in death. ;D

This is exactly what I did with my test-bench years ago.

At one radio station, all the floors were carpeted.  So during the Winter, I had to spray all the carpets with a anti-static mixture using a garden sprayer.

At another radio station, we would watch the background (elevator) music tapes on the Ampex tape recorders arc near the tape heads. Never seemed to hurt anything.

With the SoundStream digital recorder,  I discovered on a dry cold day, that just touching the switches could send it into unexpected modes of operation.
