So I whipped something up inspired by the NY Dave balanced summing network that's been floating around.
Now I've decided I'd like the next version to support an unbalanced mode (not mixed, just %100 unbalanced), as this one doesnt like it.
I can see in the original design the load on the output is generated with summing resistors between the + / - signals.

If I were to create a switch to go unbalanced, how I create the load on the output? resistor in series? or to ground?

Can you post a schematic of what you actually built? Building an unbalanced passive mixer is as easy as building a balanced one but I have the feeling you want one that can switch between the two 'modes'. In theory there is no reason why a balanced passive mixer should not be able to accept an unbalanced input so it will be helpful to see what you actually built.
