Thats for that Skipwave I see what your saying....

Im still having trouble understanding the darlington pair situation not just understanding in practise too.

As I said in my previous posts Im trying to get the 20 000 Hfe

I had a pair of BC550C  for Q2/3 according to my meter they have HFe s of 523 x519=271,437 miles from the 20 000 as required.... the lowest BD135-16 s I have are 158 X 161 = 25,438 much much nearer to the required 20 000.....

Conductor are you saying I should use one of each ?
82,634 still miles away tho ?

Anyway I tried both combinations....

A pair of BC550Cs sounds ok lots of level tho ...the lower pair of BD135-16 s are s**t sound awful ...distorted to hell.. I thouht they shgould have been best ?
Conductors BD135 & BC550  sound nice same sort of level

Heres where Im at

Aiming for 20 000

One pair of BC550C As shown in schematic Hfe 271 437 but sounds ok
One pair of BD135-16..............................Hfe 25 438 sound terrible ...unusable
A BD135-16 & a BC550C sound ok
Tried to get BC550A as per BOM could get them , got BC550 dont no if same 550A s, the lowest Hfe on these is 320 X 332 = 106240 agin miles off 20 000 but sound ok

On e guy in the large Fetboy thread say it doesnt matter ? what i dont understand is the nearest I got to 20 000 sounded really really bad ? so I would say it matters

Im still waiting for this pre to blow me away.....well it doesnt ...maybe iv been spoiled with my valve pres,it sounds different which was my aim...Unless Im getting something wrong here...as it stands its on vero boards il bolt it in a case prob use once in a blue moon when Im looking for a different sound.

one other thing is there such a lot of level......I dont no how to measure level really but against my fixed level V72 I only have the Fetboy on notch 2 out of ten to be similar level......makes me wonder if something is wrong...I get get away with just one gain block as whole pre....

Thanks for reading

This works o.k. for me:
Q1 = BF245B (with R3 = 1.3kohm, 10 of 10 biases correctly)
Q2 = BC550C
Q3 = BD139-16
Q4 = BD135 (R4 = 82kohm, BIAS-TRIMMER not used)
